Skyhawk preview talk is of close calls
The UT Martin men’s basketball team will make their seventh Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearance when it take on the No. 5 seed Tennessee State Tigers tonight at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks (11-20) — the No. 8 seed in the tournament field — have nearly tripled their win output from a year ago.
They face a Tennessee State squad that won both meetings this season, although both games were competitive.
UT Martin had a chance to go ahead twice in the final seconds of a 67-64 loss at home on Jan. 8, while the Skyhawks held a four-point halftime advantage in their defeat at Tennessee State on Feb. 5 before falling 56-47.
Skyhawks Reuben Clay-ton (11.5 points per game) and Mike Liabo (11.0 ppg) both averaged double-figures against the Tigers this season.
Andres Irarrazabal also nearly averaged a double-double (9.0 points, 8.5 rebounds).
Tennessee State (14-15) enters the tournament on a three-game winning streak.
Robert Covington averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds per game against UT Martin this season, while Patrick Miller (12.5 points per game) and Kenny Moore (11.0 ppg) also average double-figures against the Skyhawks.

If the UT Martin men win this evening, they will play Tennessee Tech on Thursday in the tourney’s semifinals in Nashville.
The UTM women’s team also plays in the OVC Tournament at Nashville this week.
The Skyhawk ladies — seeded No. 2 in the field — battled a to be determined opponent on Friday at 2 p.m.
If the UTM ladies win that game, they’ll advace to the championship game (Saturday afternoon at 3)with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
