Jimmy Ray Smith, 78, of Union City died March 1, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Union City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lawn Park Cemetery in Paducah, Ky.
There will be no visitation. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
He was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Paducah, son of the late Amos B. and Estelle (Sexton) Smith. He married the former Lola Hunt Jan. 3, 1959. She survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran. A retired engineer with the Chicago Metro Railway, he had also been employed by Illinois Central Railroad, having served as an engineer for more than 50 years. He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church and was a member of an Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Survivors also include two daughters, Debra Patterson of Union City and Kathy Ott of Brandon, Fla.; his son, Joey Ray Smith of Decatur, Ala.; his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jeffrey Gierling of Union City; seven grandchildren, Walter George Bermingham of Decatur, Glada Ott of Brandon, Odessa Pope and Hunter Ray Gierling, both of Greeley, Colo., Shawn Gierling of Ohio and Adrian Gierling and Rita Gierling, both of Union City; his sister, Agnes Williamson of Mississippi; 10 great-grandchildren; and three half brothers.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Larry Smith; and his granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Newton.
