FULTON (AP) — Discussion has begun on a possible merger of the Fulton city schools with those of Fulton County, Ky.
Parents and teachers packed the common room at Fulton City High School on Monday night as the city and county school boards met together to explore such a merger, according to The Paducah Sun.
County schools superintendent Dennis Bledsoe noted the impending closure of the Goodyear tire plant in Union City, where he said 121 Fulton County residents work. Bledsoe asked rhetorically how many students will withdraw from the schools as their families leave to find other jobs.
The county schools have 530 students and the Fulton Independent School District has 385.
Fulton Independent board member Dr. Josh Whitledge says the city school system has lost a quarter of its students in the past 10 years.
