FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Wildlife officials would need approval from local leaders before releasing elk anywhere in Kentucky under a bill approved by the House on Wednesday.
Rep. Rick Nelson of Middlesboro introduced the bill on behalf of eastern Kentucky constituents who complain that elk have become nuisances and hazards in mountain communities. The bill passed 93-5 and heads to the Senate.
Public records show more than 100 motorists have collided with elk on rural roads in eastern Kentucky since 2005 and hundreds have complained about property damage caused by roaming herds. Under Nelson’s bill, wildlife officials couldn’t release any kind of animal weighing 500 pounds or more without local consent.
