City of Sharon launches smoke alarm giveaway

Sharon Fire Department was honored to be chosen as one of only seven teams in the state to participate in the Sound the Alarm program.

This program provides teams of fire department members, fire corps volunteers and building officials with the resources to conduct home safety checks, install smoke alarms and complete follow up evaluations with households in their communities.

“Smoke alarms can really save lives and the City of Sharon is very fortunate to be a part of the Sound the Alarm program. We are certain that these alarms will make the homes in our town much safer and better prepared should a fire occur,” Chief Gary Eddings explained.

In order to successfully complete this program, the department is looking for households to participate.

The fire department team will visit the homes of participating families to conduct a home safety check, identifying ways that the residents can improve the safety of their home, both inside and out.

If smoke alarms are nonexistent, not functional or outdated, they will be replaced with new alarms at no cost, meeting the standard of one on every floor of the home, in each bedroom and outside sleeping areas.

“We ask all households who need these alarms to step forward and request them. We are here to help and we want to do everything we can to keep everyone in our community safe from fire,” Eddings said.

For more information or to request and schedule a smoke alarm installation and home safety inspection, contact Sharon City Hall at 456-2122 or via email at sharonfire@frontiernet.net.
