The top-seeded Dresden Lions earned the right to play for the District 13-A title by holding off a Clarksburg Rocket charge in the semifinals.
Dresden, which beat the Rockets by 18 and 21 points during the regular season, edged fourth-seeded Clarksburg 77-73 on Friday night at Atwood.
The Lions trailed for most of the first quarter before Jacob Vallee’s late 3-pointer sent them into the second quarter ahead 18-15.
Two Joseph Sipes free throws and a steal and old-fashioned 3-point play by Gatlin Hatchel stretched the Lions lead to eight, 23-15. Hatchel’s hustle plays continued, but Dresden could not shake free of Clarksburg and led by five, 33-28, at halftime.
Matt Foster kept the Rockets close with a pair of treys in the third. He hit five shots from behind the arc in the contest. A 3-pointer by Daniel Harris pushed the Lion lead to double digits, 48-38, for the first time with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Ahead 52-42 heading into the fourth, Dresden allowed Clarksburg to trim the gap to two, 61-59, with a half minute to play.
The Rockets had a chance to tie with a trey but turned the ball over with 14 ticks left. DHS then hit four free throws to ice the 66-62 win.
Vallee’s 16 points topped all Lion scorers, one of four to reach double digits. Matt Beaty followed with 15 for DHS, while Hatchel chipped in with 13 and Tyle McPeak worked the paint for 11 points. Foster’s 19 points keyed Clarksburg, while teammates Devon Bailey and Austin Avery each contributed 16 points to the CHS total.
