It’s been a long time coming, but the Dresden Lions can once again hoist the District 13-A championship trophy. The last district title for the Lions came in 1990.
Led by 16 points from Daniel Harris, the Lions held on and fought off a feisty Bruceton squad – a team Dresden swept in the regular season – and sealed the victory with free throws, 54-49, in the District 13-A Tournament title game Monday night in Atwood.
In Region 7-A action on Friday night, the Lions will next host the Union City Tornadoes, the No. 4 seed from District 14-A, while Bruceton will entertain Greenfield, the No. 3 seed.
Harris came out firing and scored nine quick first-quarter points to lead Dresden to a 14-6 advantage. Bruceton came back, however, and with a successful 3-point play from Chandler Jordan to end the first quarter, the visiting Tigers held a one-point lead, 18-17.
As the lead changed hands constantly with each team claiming a one-point edge in the second, the Tigers took the 30-27 lead at the break on four straight points from Chandler and Elijah Phillips.
Both teams started cold from the field in the third quarter, but Harris took over and helped Dresden to a 31-30 lead. Tyler McPeak added a layup and Jacob Vallee made a jumpshot to give the Lions breathing room, 35-30. Bruceton couldn’t buy a basket, but with 2:20 left in the quarter Hayden Williams knocked down a three and sparked a Tiger comeback. The Tigers cleaned up the boards and reclaimed the lead on a 3-point play from Rekaysis McCauley. McPeak stuck back an offensive board, but the Tigers led 38-37 after three.
The nail biting continued through the majority of the fourth quarter as each team captured and relinquished the lead. With 1:17 remaining, however, Vallee broke free in the lane and made a tough floater to increase the Dresden lead to three – 47-44 – and that proved to be the decisive turning point for the Lions. Closing out the hard-fought victory with free throws, Dresden earned the district title, 54-49.
Along with Harris’ 16, Vallee scored 13 for the Lions. Jordan led Bruceton with 19.
