Three proved to be better than two for the Dresden Lady Lions.
The top-seeded Dresden girls used their outside shooting prowess to counter the size of the McKenzie Lady Rebels for a 59-39 win — their 13th straight — in the District 13-A semifinals Thursday night at Atwood.
With the larger Lady Rebels blocking shots in close, Dresden opted to step behind the arch on offense. Five different Lady Lions combined to drill eight shots from behind the 3-point line in the win that gave them a shot at the district title.
“We shot about 46 percent from 3-point range. We’ve been shooting the ball well all along,” Dresden head coach Jonathan West noted.
DHS senior Jesica Parsley crashed the boards to corral the misses and the Lady Lion press did its job to frustrate McKenzie.
Amy Reddick connected twice from outside as Dresden built a 12-5 lead after a quarter.
The DHS lead reached double digits in the second quarter as Jessica Jones joined the 3-shooting party. Also, Allie Phillips began to assert herself in the paint with four points for the Lady Lions. DHS held a 29-18 lead at the half.
“Jes and Allie both played really well. Jes is probably going to finish as one of the top rebounders at our school,” West commented.
The ball bounced Dresden’s way in the third as twice at crucial moments deflections landed in the hands of Lady Lions. With a trey from Amy McAlpin and eight points from Phillips, by the end of the third, the Dresden lead expanded to 15 points at 46-31.
The Lady Lion lead peaked at 21 points, 57-36, when Parsley nailed her only 3-pointer with just under three minutes remaining in the contest before settling at 20 points, 59-39, for the final score.
Phillips topped all scorers with a dozen points, while Alex Glisson, who had a pair of 3-pointers, and Parsley each tallied 11 for the Lady Lions.
