The Gleason Lady Bulldogs didn’t want to play the role of Victim No. 2 for Big Sandy’s Lady Red Devils.
After the seventh-seeded Lady Red Devils pulled off a quarterfinal upset win over West Carroll, the second-seeded Gleason Lady Bulldogs wasted no time in showing that the seeding was indicative of how the final outcome should be in their District 13-A Tournament semifinal Thursday night in Atwood.
Gleason blasted out of the gate and took a 53-30 win.
The Lady Bulldogs utilized their inside game early. Briana Jones pitched in 10 first-quarter points to help Gleason to a 14-5 lead after a quarter. The Lady Dawgs did a good job of shutting down Big Sandy’s top weapon Luz Mena. Mena amassed 43 points in their tourney upset win, but managed just 11 against Gleason. Marisa Fletcher tried to take up the slack for Big Sandy with a 3-pointer in the first quarter and two more in the second frame.
Gleason countered with a trey from Camille Cooper in the second and carried a 25-15 lead into the half.
GHS senior Sara Hensley took over in the third quarter with eight points to help the Lady Dawgs to a 41-23 lead after three en route to the 53-30 victory.

Jones’ 19 points topped all scorers, while Hensley followed closely with 17 points for Gleason. Flether led the Lady Devils with 15 points, 12 of them from 3-point range.
