With a painful loss to the up-and-coming Union City Lady Golden Tornadoes and the resulting lost opportunity for a district championship still fresh in their minds, the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets controlled the Bradford Lady Red Devils from the start and won in a much more dominant fashion than the final score, 54-48, indicated to take third place in the District 14-A Tournament Saturday night in Trenton.
Jackilann Street opened the contest for Bradford with a steal and was fouled on the layup attempt. She hit one of two free throws, but Galey came back with a three – one of her three first-quarter trifectas. Sarah Combs tied the score with a turnaround and the scoring remained neck and neck until Galey hit her second and third threes with 30 seconds still to play in the quarter, posted an offensive board and putback and closed out the first with a 13-9 advantage for the Lady Yellowjackets.
Shameilla McMullen scored inside to increase the Greenfield lead to 15-9 at the start of the second. Street converted a 3-point play, but Galey hit her fourth three of the contest and the Lady Yellowjackets took their largest lead thus far, 18-12. Bradford entered the bonus, but more Lady Yellowjackets entered the three club. Andrea Smith and Abby McDaniel added one trifecta each helping Greenfield to a 24-12 lead. Street led Bradford in scoring the last six points of the quarter, but Bradford trailed 25-18 at the break.
Galey completed a 3-point play to start the third and Combs picked up her fourth foul with 6:37 on the clock. As Galey entered a scoring tear, Bradford became increasingly flustered and with 3:14 on the clock, a technical foul was assessed to the Lady Devils. Four straight free throws made the score 36-22. Combs returned to score five points, but Greenfield led 43-27 at the end of three and 13 of Greenfield’s 18 total points for the quarter belonged to Galey.
Greenfield continued to lead in a big way throughout the fourth quarter and, despite Bradford’s picking up the pace a bit when Greenfield’s reserves were inserted in the final minute and a half, the Lady Yellowjackets left little doubt in the minds of anyone that they’d earned the third-place finish.
Galey led all scorers with 28. Street scored 16 for Bradford.
