William Ross Shelton, 53, of the Crystal community died at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City Feb. 18, 2011.
Services were set for 11 a.m. today at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Revs. Larry Nichols, Chip Davis, Terry Council and Paul Adams and Dan Huggins officiating. Burial was to follow in New Haven Cemetery in Ridgely.
Pallbearers were to be James Crigger, Bret Haynes, Bobby Berner, Charlie Hill, Ty Roney and Josh Roney. Honorary pallbearers were to be Ricky Council, Tony White, Rob Naylor, Steve Lee, Jeremy Bugg, Joe Clanton, Richard Bell, Todd Guess, Tommy Council, Dr. Steve Beachum, Ray Devasier, Bud Fisher, Greg Clifton, Brad Robertson and Keith Kirk.
The family requests that memorials be made to Obion County Central High School Quarterback Club through an account being set up at Reelfoot Bank as the Ross Shelton Memorial Account or through OCCHS Quarterback Club, in care of Crislen Bone, treasurer, at 2555 Bradford Pear Lane in Union City.
He was born Oct. 16, 1957, in Tacoma, Wash., son of Joseph William “J.W.” Shelton of Union City and the late Sylvia (Faught) Shelton. He married the former Dana Ray Dec. 19, 1989. She survives. He was a farmer and was named Chicken Grower of the Year by Tyson Foods in 2009. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and was one of the founding members of the Obion County Youth Football League. He was instrumental in the formation and was an active member of the Obion County Central High School Quarterback Club.
He is also survived by his stepmother, Nancy Shelton of Union City; his son, Bret Shelton of Union City; two daughters, Laura Beth Shelton and Abby Shelton, both of Union City; his sister and brother-in-law, Missy and Charlie Hill of Union City; two stepbrothers and his sister-in-law, the Rev. Terry and Julie Council of Troy and Ricky Council of Union City; two nieces, Mandy Ortega of California and Beth Tolley of Troy; and three nephews, Ty Roney and Josh Roney, both of Troy, and Tommy Council of Medina.
He was also preceded in death by his stepbrother, Donnie Council; and his grandparents, Douglas and Blanche Faught and Ray and Alcie Shelton.
