The second-seeded Chargers eliminated the Gibson County Pioneers, winning 77-57 in the 13-AA Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night in Martin. The victory avenged a 68-63 January loss to GC.
With the win, Westview advances to the semifinals where it will face the Dyersburg Trojans at 7:30 on Friday night in Dyersburg. The Trojans edged Crockett County, 69-68, in overtime.
Westview repeatedly allowed the Gibson County Pioneers to crash the board and cash in with second-chance points in the first half. After the intermission, however, the Chargers were able to limit Gibson County to a single shot in most possessions and stretched a 15-point halftime lead to as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.
Westview fell behind by five early when Pioneer John Lee came up with a steal and layup and a 3-pointer. The Chargers turned it around with defense for a 14-2 run that included consecutive breakaway slam dunks by Javier Gordon and a trey each from Antonio Hogard and Dillon Gardner for a 16-9 lead with 2:16 left in the opening quarter.
Heading into the second, WHS held an 18-13 edge. GC continued to benefit from offensive rebounds. The Charger lead hit double digits for the first time at 33-22 when Jacob Lloyd’s rebound led to a Gordon layup with 1:22 left in the half. His reverse layup extended the gap and Lloyd closed the scoring with a last-second drive for a Westview 37-22 halftime advantage.
In the first possession after the break, Pioneer Shaquille Watson scored on a putback, but the Chargers rarely allowed an offensive rebound following that.
The WHS offense continued to click as Hogard put in six more points and Gordon and Gardner each added five as part of the 21-point Charger output to lead 58-34 after three.
In the fourth, Gardner drilled his third and fourth treys. Pioneer Denzel Harris got hot and nailed a quartet of 3-pointers. Even so, Westview took a 77-55 win.
Gordon led all scorers with 21 points followed by Hogard’s 18, Chris Evans’ 15 and 14 from Gardner.
