Obion County Central High School Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) vice president Byron Brown recently had an opportunity to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Chicago.
He was honored by being nominated as an Outstanding Health Science Student.
Brown is very involved in the local HOSA chapter. He traveled over the summer for 10 days to participate with other students across the country at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
While at the leadership conference, he heard from nationally-known physicians from leading hospitals throughout the nation, including Dr. David Howes, who specializes in emergency medicine and is known as a health care visionary at the University of Chicago medical facility.
Brown was able to experience a knee replacement procedure in which the surgeon interacted with students and answered many of their questions.
He was able to tour their medical facility while learning medical procedures, participating in legal/ethical debates in health care, disaster planning and experiencing the daily routines of several physicians.
“This experience was a chance of a lifetime and has encouraged me to continue to fulfill my goal of becoming a radiologist and a leader in my community,” he said.
Brown, a senior at Obion County Central High School, is the son of Tracy and Sherilyn Brown of Troy.
