Out of reach — Dresden’s Dale Hutcherson (left), in an earlier game against Gleason, fends off Bulldog Austin Perry while teammate Joseph Sipes moves in. Winning 76-44 in the District 13-A quarterfinals, Dresden ended Gleason’s season.
The top-seeded Dresden Lions weren’t about to let the No. 9 seed Gleason Bulldogs pull off an upset in a must-win District 13-A quarterfinal contest Tuesday night in Dresden.
The Lions fended off an early Bulldog challenge and took the 76-44 victory over Gleason.
With the victory, the Dresden boys advance to the tourney semifinals and also earn a berth in the regional tournament. In the district semifinals at 6 on Friday night at Atwood, the Lions will take on the Clarksburg Rockets, the No. 4 seed. The Rockets advanced with a 56-53 win over Huntingdon.
The loss ended Gleason’s season with a 3-24 record.
In the Lion win over GHS, 3-point shots fell early for both teams. Gleason got a long-range hits from its lone senior, Ben Rollins, and another from Gabe Lowrance. Dresden countered with two treys from Matt Beaty and a 3-pointer from Gatlin Hatchel. Daniel Harris added six points to the DHS first-quarter total as the Lions carried a 21-11 lead into the second frame.
Dawg Blake Taylor got in on the 3-point action in the second frame. Dresden more than matched that with Joseph Sipes drilling two 3-pointers and Jacob Vallee and Harris each adding one from behind the arc to hold a 37-23 halftime lead.
Harris added two more 3-balls in the third, part of his game-high 21 points, to help DHS to a 56-35 edge heading into the fourth.
Along with Harris’ points, Dresden got 12 from Tyler McPeak and 10 from Beaty. Rollins led GHS with 9 points in his career finale.
