The Reelfoot Area Chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild Association (SAGA) will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Obion County Public Library, located at 1221 East Reelfoot Ave. in Union City. All sewing enthusiasts of any skill level or area of interest are invited to attend. Attendees are also encouraged to bring needlework and sewing projects for show-and-tell.
The chapter has set a regular meeting time to be on the third Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. at the library, unless otherwise announced. Quarterly Saturday work sessions are also scheduled.
The Reelfoot Area chapter is focusing on learning a new embroidery stitch or technique every month. A notebook of stitches will be made from the lessons as a reference book for each member. Those interested in participating should bring basic embroidery tools such as needles, scissors, thread and fabric swatches on which to stitch the lesson.
The Wee Care project will also be a focus of the meeting. National SAGA members have adopted the Wee Care project to sew and smock simple bishop-style gowns and bonnets in order to donate them to local hospitals to meet the need for gowns for babies who die at birth or shortly afterwards. Wee Care Kits are made available by the chapter to members at no cost and to non-members for $5.
Membership in SAGA, a national non-profit organization, provides numerous benefits including access to workshops, patterns, instructions, growth in knowledge and skills and communication with others in the world of fine hand sewing and related needle arts. National dues are $30 per year.
