The Bulldogs kept their season alive with a 61-50 win over the Carroll Academy Jaguars in a must-win District 13-A play-in game at Atwood.
The victory advances the Dawgs to the quarterfinals where they will take on the host Dresden Lions at 6:30 on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs led by as many as a dozen points, 51-39, mid way through the fourth quarter. The desperate Jaguars cranked up the pressure and cut their deficit in half by forcing Gleason into turnovers on three of four possessions.
A Gabe Lowrance layup after the Dawgs beat the press slowed the Carroll Academy comeback and gave Gleason a 55-47 lead with 2:03 remaining.
From that point, Thomas Fowler came up with an offensive rebound and hit 4-of-6 free throw tries to extend the Dawgs’ advantage to 59-50 with 39 ticks left on the clock.
Austin Perry then created a steal and hit a layup for the final points in Gleason’s 61-50 victory.
Gleason used second chance points and free throws to pull ahead in the first quarter. Fowler and Perry each put in four points to propel the Dawgs to a 13-9 lead after a frame.
Gleason expanded its lead in the second quarter. Both Ben Rollins and Fowler pitched in with five points including a connection from behind the 3-point line.
Tanner Trevathan’s last-second jumper gave the Dawgs their first double-digit cushion, 30-20, at the half.
Rollins added his second trey of the night early in the third. The Dawgs appeared on the verge of a blowout victory as Perry put in a 4-footer for a 45-28 lead with 1:12 left in the third and held a 45-29 lead into the fourth.
Rollins’ 16 points led Gleason. Fowler and Perry each added 14 points. Marcus Bardwell’s 20 topped Carroll Academy.
