The Fortnightly Club of Martin held its February Meeting at the home of Nell Sparks. A wonderful dessert plate was served by the gracious hostesses for the meeting Melba Wash, Ruby Brundige and Sparks. A book review of “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett was presented by the speaker Marlow Peters. Peters is from Montgomery Ala., and has worked in many areas of library service in the United States and abroad. She spent 20 years working in Europe for the Headquarters of the USAF Library system. Quite interestingly Peters made some comparison of her own life growing up in Alabama to those in Stockett’s book. This inspired many of the members to also share childhood experiences from their hometowns in Texas, Tennessee, and even Mississippi where Ms. Stockett’s book is set. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Mollie Gallien conducted a short business meeting. Members present but not yet mentioned were Carolyn Brown, Marion Fields, Carol Gibson, Lynn Gibson, Carolyn Gresham, Carolyn James, Donna Jones, Dottie Smith, Barbara Trentham, Linda Wade, and Pat Watkins. They were so very happy to have Sparks’s daughter, Cynthia Jarrett join them for this wonderful afternoon.
It was also a great pleasure to share this meeting with one of the long time faithful members, Sue Foote, now an honorary member.
