Beard earns top OVC rifle honor

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin head rifle coach Bob Beard was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year, while senior Kaitlin Chaffin and freshman Mark McClallen were recognized for their sharpshooting at the OVC Championships hosted by Jacksonville State University over the weekend.
Murfreesboro native Chaffin was named to the league’s smallbore second team, while McClallen, from Carbondale, Ill., earned a spot on the air rifle all-newcomer squad.
For Beard, it was his third OVC Coach of the Year honor, as he also took the award in 2000 and 2007.
Overall, the UT Martin mixed squad finished third with an aggregate score of 4,556 (2,281 smallbore, 2,275 air rifle). The women’s team compiled scores of 2,167 in smallbore and 2,228 in air rifle to place fifth with 4,395 points.
Chaffin led the mixed team with a 576 effort in smallbore, while Justin Grinolds fired a 572. Kelsea Hunt and Alex Silvas finished with scores of 568 and 565, respectively, and Josh Pagel produced a 559. McClallen rounded out the scoring with his 555.
Jennifer Garbina and Jordan Goodwin each shot a 549 to pace the women’s team in smallbore, while Kellie Zurowski (540) and Jamie Arnett (529) closed out the scoring.
In air rifle, Hunt’s 579 led the way for the mixed team, while Pagel’s 570 was the next highest score. Chaffin and Grinolds finished with scores of 566 and 560, respectively.
A score of 571 by Zurowski paced the women’s team in air rifle. Garbina wasn’t far behind with a 566. Arnett and Goodwin finished with scores of 551 and 540 to end the team’s scoring.
UT Martin returns to action this weekend, taking part in the NCAA Qualifier held in Murray, Ky., on Saturday and Sunday.
