Defense wins championships and the Junior Lady Yellowjackets are out to prove that statement.
Thanks to a withering defensive effort, the Greenfield Junior High Lady Jackets live to play another day in the T-N-T State Tournament at Springfield.
The Greenfield girls won their opening round game Saturday by clamping down after halftime for a 20-17 victory over the two-time defending champion Carroll Oakland.
Both defenses shined in the first half. Neither team could create enough offense to open and hold onto any sizeable lead.
At the halftime break, the score was knotted at 12-all.
After the intermission, the Lady Jackets’ defense turned even more stifling, limiting Carroll Oakland to five points combined over the final two quarters to bring a victory back to Weakley County.
The Junior Lady Yellowjackets now advance to the semifinals where they are set to play on Feb. 18.
Brittany Peoples topped the Lady Jackets with nine points in the quarterfinals, while teammates Chasity McMullen and Shaynece Clemons each scored four points. Alle Dees rounded out the GJH scoring with three points.
