UTM ladies come back
NASHVILLE (AP) — Freshmen Jasmine Newsome and Beth Hawn combined to score 21 second-half points and lead the UT Martin women to a 70-64 come-from-behind victory over host Tennessee State Saturday in the Gentry Center.
The Skyhawks trailed 42-31 at halftime.
Newsome led all UTM scorers with 15 points, while Heather Butler finished the game with 14 points.
Skyhawk senior Alecia Weatherly added 12 points and Hawn tossed in 10 points.
In the men’s contest on Saturday, Robert Covington had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Tennessee State rallied to defeat UT Martin 56-47.
The Tigers (11-12, 8-5 Ohio Valley Conference) swept the season series against the Skyhawks (8-17, 3-10). Tennessee State won 67-64 on Jan. 8.
With the Tigers trailing 27-20 with 1:20 left in the first half, Covington scored the last three points of the first half and seven during a 13-0 run to open the second.
Mike Liabo scored 11 points to pace the Skyhawks, who have lost three straight.
UTM hosts Jacksonville State Thursday and Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
