With twin wins over Golden opponents, the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets cemented their hold on second place in the District 14-A race.
The Greenfield boys tarnished their chances to finish in fourth in the district by dropping two contests.
The Greenfield girls downed Peabody’s Lady Golden Tide, 54-28, on Tuesday night and avenged an earlier loss to the Union City Lady Golden Tornadoes, winning 54-47, on Friday evening.
In the boys games, the Yellowjacket could not tame their foes, falling 62-52 to Peabody and 67-50 to Union City. In their earlier contests against these two teams, Greenfield upended Peabody and dropped a tough overtime decision at Union City.
On the road against Peabody, the Lady Jackets jumped on top early and never let  up. Greenfield led 18-9 after a quarter and was in control at the half, 34-13. Galey connected three times from behind the 3-point arc to top all scorers with 13 points. Shameilla McMullen also reached double digits with 11 points.
The GHS boys saw their deficit grow as the game went along against the Tide. The Jackets trailed 19-14 after a quarter and 37-27 at halftime. Greenfield trimmed a few points off the deficit in the third, but still trailed 44-37 heading into the fourth.
Wes Clark led Greenfield with 18 points, while Tyler Jones added 15 points.
Against visiting Union City, it appeared the Lady Tornadoes would claim a season sweep, leading 30-24 at halftime.
Greenfield turned it around in the second half, taking better care of the ball and hitting free throws down the stretch to win 54-47. Galey, who scored the 1,500th point of her high school career in the win, pitched in 25 points. The senior was a perfect 14-of-14 at the free-throw line.
In the boys game, Union City forced the Jackets into turnovers and kept them off the boards for the 67-50 win.
The Tornadoes led 17-9 after a quarter and 34-24 at halftime. Heading into the final frame, UC was up 55-39 on the way to the win.
Heath Crouse topped the Jackets with 18 points.
