When Tiffany Rechis finds a rhythm, very rarely can her opponents keep up with the beat.
Such was the case Saturday as the Martin Middle School Lady Panthers took on the Black Oak Lady Eagles and won 41-24 in first-round action of the Area Five Middle School Tournament in South Fulton.
The Lady Eagles equaled Martin in points for the first quarter, but slacked up in the second and barely eclipsed their first-quarter points total for the remainder of the contest as Rechis scored 19 and the Lady Panthers routed the Lady Eagles.
Kelsey Pollock opened the game with a jumpshot for Black Oak, but Katie Vincent quickly answered with a three for MMS. Several scrambles ensued as both teams ironed out mistakes and the Lady Eagles surged ahead as Pollock and Diana Flippen combined to give Black Oak the 8-3 lead. The 6-0 run was shortlived, however, as Rechis broke free and hit two straight trifectas to reclaim the lead for the Lady Panthers, 9-8. Claudia Cheatham made a three at the other end, but Alexis Taylor threw in a jumper before the buzzer and the first quarter ended with an 11-11 tie.
Cheatham continued with the hot hand with a three to open the second. MMS relied on free throws and two straight layups from Rechis. Black Oak only managed a Pollock hoop to go with the Cheatham trey as Martin led 22-16 at the half.
Led by five points each from Rechis and Katie Vincent and holding Black Oak to three points, the Lady Panthers began to pull away, 34-19, at the end of three and the Weakley County squad finished the win in the fourth by outscoring the visitors, 7-5, to complete the 41-24 victory and move on to the semifinals.
Along with Rechis’ 19 points, Vincent put up 11. Pollock’s 14 led Black Oak.
