The Martin Police Department is now accepting applications for members of the 22nd Session of the Citizen’s Police Academy. This session is scheduled to begin March 3, a week prior to its original announcement date due to a scheduling conflict.
The Citizen’s Police Academy is a chance for citizens that live or work in the Martin area to get a first -hand view of the operations of the Martin Police Department. When someone graduates the Citizen’s Police Academy they are not certified as a police officer, but will have a better understanding of what police officers face everyday.
The class will meet one night a week for nine weeks. Instruction will include use of force, undercover drug operations, crime scene investigation, DUI enforcement, criminal law, firearms and other areas.
Also during the nine-week class, the participants will be required to ride with a Martin Police officer at least two times, with one of the ride-alongs to be between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
More than 450 citizens have graduated from the Citizen’s Police Academy program since its inception in 1993. Applications can be picked up at the MPD or downloaded from the Martin Police Department website, www.martindps.org.
Applications will be accepted until Feb. 25 or until the class is filled. For more information about the Citizen’s Police Academy please call Captain Don Teal at (731)-587-5355 ext. 235.
