NEWBERN (AP) — A church leader in Newbern is accused of depleting the bank account of the Newbern Lions Club. He formerly served as the club’s president.
WREG-TV reports Samuel Peters is charged with theft over $1,000.
Members of the Lions say Peters never paid dues and hasn’t been a member for months, but his name was still on the club checking account and he made three withdrawals. The club used its money to provide eyesight assistance to children.
Newbern Police Investigator Rodney Wright says Peters told police he used the first two transactions to help people but wouldn’t identify them.
WREG found the Holy Ghost Deliverance Center, where Peters is the pastor, closed and was told by a woman at his listed home address that he no longer lives there.
