Completed arrangements for John A. Van Allen, 89, of Hicksville, N.Y., who died Jan. 22, 2011, are being announced today. He was the grandfather of William Jay Ryder of Union City.
Services were to be held today at 9:45 a.m. at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church in Hicksville, with Father Joseph McCabe officiating. Entombment was to follow in Holy Rood Cemetery in Hicksville.
Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Homes in Hicksville was in charge of arrangements.
He was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Rahway, N.J., son of the late William and Mary Van Allen. He married Stella Purdoski in 1943. She died in 1996. He was a World War II Army veteran who served tours in Italy and North Africa and was a retired letter carrier for the Hicksville Post Office. He enjoyed music and dancing. An avid HAM radio operator, he collected QSL cards from HAM operators all over the world.
He is survived by two daughters, Virginia Ryder of Nashville and Coconut Creek, Fla., and Cindy Adamy of Doylestown, Pa.; seven other grandchildren and their spouses, Rebecca and David Clemens and Elizabeth and Ernie Sykes, all of Nashville, and Jessica Adamy, Thomas Pindulic, Sean Adamy, Kelly Adamy and Brendan Adamy, all of Doylestown; the spouse of his grandson, Donna Ryder of Union City; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan Ryder and Matthew Ryder, both of Union City, and Ana Clemens, David Clemens and Lauren Sykes, all of Nashville; two brothers, Howard Van Allen of New Jersey and Thomas Van Allen of New York; and his sister, Gertrude Commini of Miami, Fla.
He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
