Sports postponements for Friday/Messenger Sports Briefs for January 21

Hardwood slate
affected by snow

There will be no happenings on the hardwood this evening.
All of the scheduled basketball games for tonight were postponed  due to the inclement weather.
For starters, Union City’s twinbill at Trenton was taken off this evening’s slate. It will be made up Feb. 8.
South Fulton’s twinbill at Bradford has also been postponed.
The two teams will try to make up the doubleheader – if weather permits on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Obion County School System Tournament, which was postponed on Thursday, will now begin on Saturday (at 4 p.m.) inside the SF gym, if weather permits.
Union City Middle School’s West Tennessee Athletic Conference Tournament game on Thursday at Munford was also postponed.
Tonight’s WTAC boys’ game between the Twisters and Crestview has also been put on the backburner.
No make-up dates have been announced for either of those contests.

UTM softball team
picked 3rd in OVC

The UT Martin softball team has been picked to place third in the Ohio Valley Conference softball standings this season.
The Skyhawks received 78 points in the preseason voting by the league’s head coaches.
Defending league tournament champion Jacksonville State was selected to win the 2011 OVC crown. The Gamecocks earned eight first-place votes and 97 points.
UT Martin is coming off a year in which it went 47-11 overall and 22-3 in the OVC en route to its first league regular-season title. The Skyhawks will have six starters and three pitchers coming back from last year’s championship team.
The 2011 softball campaign gets under way on Feb. 12 with conference play starting March 12. The 2011 OVC Softball Championship takes place on May 12-14 on the campus of the highest seed.
