Day of remembrance planned in Martin

To honor the fallen civil rights leader and his contribution to history, the County and Community Outreach Committee invites all community members to a day of remembrance for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 17, with a march. Beginning at 120 K Street, members of the county and community will march together representing the dream and unity displayed by the life and legacy of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement. The march will go from 120 K St. to 120 South St., from the former Oak Grove M.B. Church to the new Oak Grove M.B. Church.

The theme for the occasion is The Dream: Remember It, Acknowledge it, Achieve it. At 12 noon at Oak Grove, there will be a service of celebration and the public is invited to attend. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Daniel Donaldson, minister of Salem Baptist Church in Humboldt.

Donaldson is the father of Dr. Danny Donaldson and Brittany Donaldson and the son of Luther Donaldson, Jr. and the late Charlie Lou Donaldson. He is married to Athalia Giles Donaldson.

In addition to serving as pastor of Salem Baptist Church in Humboldt for 29 years, Donaldson is a volunteer ombudsman, student mentor in the local school system and a substitute teacher. After retiring from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a senior buyer in 2007 with 35 years worth of service, he and four other retirees from Goodyear have formed The Three M Ministry: Mission Minded Men. They offer assistance to people locally and out of state.
