An early morning fire today has destroyed a rural home off East Highway 21, just soutwest of Rives.
Firefighters from the Rives Volunteeer Fire Department were still on the scene at 2035 East Highway 21 early today handling several “hot spots,” according to Rives Fire Chief David Kendall.
He and fellow firefighters first responded to the fire shortly after 2 a.m. today and when they arrived the residence was “fully engulfed,” Kendall said.
“It was blazed out from the roof from one end to the other,” he said.
The home was owned by Billy Autry Jr., who was reportedly at home at the time of the fire and had to break out a window to escape. Attempts by The Messenger to contact him were unsuccessful.
Assisting the Rives Volunteer Fire Department were firefighters from Union City, Troy and Kenton. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 6 a.m. today, but had to return shortly after 8 a.m. to douse several hot spots that had rekindled, according to Kendall.
Kendall described the house as a total loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
