Both the WHS Lady Chargers and Chargers earned season sweeps of the Dresden squads with their pair of victories. The Westview girls took a 43-28 win over the host Lady Lions, while in the nightcap, Westview’s boys raced to an 84-58 win. The twin wins matched Westview’s two victories when the teams met in late November. In their earlier outings, the WHS girls won 56-29, while the Chargers took a 70-41 victory in the first meeting.
On Thursday night, it took the Lady Chargers a while to heat up, but once they did they controlled the Lady Lions. Dresden led 7-4 on a Jessica Jones trey and baskets from Kristen Childress and Allie Phillips in the first quarter. Westview’s lone points came when Taylor Swaim hit two free throws and came up with a steal and a layup.
The Lady Chargers limited Dresden to an Amy Reddick 3-ball in the second. The WHS offense finally found its rhythm and tallied eight points for a 12-10 halftime lead.
Westview blew the game open in the third, outscoring Dresden 23-4. WHS seniors Jacey Sims and Breanna Pitcher did the bulk of the damage. Pitcher poured in all of her game-high 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Sims added all seven points to help Westview to a 35-14 lead heading into the fourth.
Westview rolled on to the 43-28 win.
Jones led the Lady Lions with nine points.
In the boys game, Westview used its inside outside combination to counter a big night by Dresden’s Daniel Harris (26 points) for an 84-58 win.
The Chargers built a double-digit lead twice in the first quarter on 3-pointers by Dillon Gardner and Jazell Baker to go with nine points down low from Javier Gordon. Harris then went to work with 11 first-quarter points, but Westview still led 23-18 after a frame.
Harris got help from Tyler Hawks with five points in the second quarter, but Jacob Lloyd warmed up for WHS with 12 points and the defense forced Lion turnovers. Westview enjoyed a 42-32 halftime lead.
The Chargers pulled away in the third for a 68-48 lead after three en route to the 84-58 triumph.
Lloyd and Gordon each scored 20 for Westview.
