Billy Jair Houston, 80, of Memphis, a former resident of this area and the brother of Coy Reece Houston of Kenton, died Jan. 10, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital’s hospice center in Memphis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Memphis Funeral Home North at 3700 North Germantown Parkway, with burial following there in Memory Hill Gardens.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Gibson County, son of the late Coy Martin and Irma Jewel (Harris) Houston, who had made their home in Rutherford and Kenton. He married the former Rita Walker Jan. 1, 1953. She survives. He was a graduate of the former Mason Hall High School and made his living as a steel detailer. He was a member of East Shelby and Southeast Shelby Republican organizations, as well as the Hot Cotton Jazz Club and the Memphis Traditional Jazz Club.
Survivors also include his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and David Montgomery of Memphis; two sons and his daughter-in-law, Kirk and Carol Houston and Jeff Houston, all of Memphis; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; another brother, Larry Wendell Houston of Memphis; his sister-in-law, Helen Houston of Union City, formerly of Kenton; his nieces and nephews, Gary Houston, Beverly Grady, David Houston and Glenda Caudle, all of Union City, Janet Melsa of Franklin, Kim Inmon of Memphis and Pam Gronoski of Arlington; several great nieces and great nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Glennon Harris Houston; and his infant sister, Truma Dean Houston.
