A Hornbeak man died Monday in a traffic accident in neighboring Dyer County.
Jackie W. Griffith, 60, a resident of North Shawtown Road, died in a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 10:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 51.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported Griffith was southbound when his 1993 Ford pickup truck veered west from the highway, struck a mailbox and continued south to exit the roadway entirely on the west side.
The vehicle traveled up an embankment in a residential lawn, where it became airborne over a private drive. It landed south of the drive and continued in a southerly direction, where it struck a fence, and then traveled through the fence, crossed over a second private drive and struck a large standing tree.
The driver was dead at the scene. Griffith was not wearing a seat belt, according to the THP report.
