After winning their first dozen games of the season, a sluggish second quarter doomed the Westview Chargers to their first loss.
The Chargers’ rally came up short as they fell, 63-59, to the Station Camp Bisons in the semifinals of the 46th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament Wednesday night in Martin.
The Chargers trailed by a point, 9-8, heading into the second frame. Station Camp then dominated the boards and outscored WHS 15-4 to carry a 24-12 lead into halftime. Westview made no shots from the floor and hit just four free throws in the quarter. Westview connected on only six of its 12 shots at the free-throw line during the game.
Coming out with more inspired play in the third quarter, Westview’s offense was lifted by Jacob Lloyd’s 21 points after halftime. However, the Charger defense failed to get a hand in the face of Bison sharpshooter Brad McClung. Each time Westview trimmed its deficit, McClung drilled another 3-pointer to widen the gap. McClung hit three treys in the third and tallied six for the game for the bulk of his team-high 22 points.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Westview trailed  39-28. Station Camp scored the first seven points of the frame to regain control. Lloyd, Dillon Gardner and Chris Evans tried to key a comeback, but WHS never cut the gap back to a single possession and fell 63-59.
