A young man from Union City became the first fatality in the state when he perished in a vehcile accident early Saturday morning.

Travis A. Taylor, 22, was killed in a single-vehicle accident that occurred early New Year’s morning just outside of Martin on Hyndsver Road.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Ford said Taylor was killed about a half mile east of Martin around 2 a.m. Saturday morning when his 2005 Ford F-15 pick up went off the road.

Ford said Taylor  went off the right side of the road and the victim over corrected and then went off the left side of the road and struck a tree head on.

The vehicle then over turned.

Ford said on Monday morning that he didn’t think alcohol was a factor in the accident, but heavy rains and slick roads might have played into the incident.

Other agencies providing emergency response included the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department, Martin Police Department, Martin Fire Department, Weakley County Ambulance Service and local first responders.

Taylor was a graduate of Obion County Central High School and a University of Tennessee at Martin student.

His funeral services  were held Monday at 2 p.m. at White Ranson Funeral Home in Union City.

Burial was held in the Obion County Memorial Gardens Cemetary.
