The Westview Lady Chargers’ quest for a 10th straight championship crown in the annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament was ended by the Liberty Tech Lady Crusaders on Thursday night.
The bigger Lady Crusaders dominated the second half to pull away for a 47-29 victory. Liberty outscored the Lady Chargers 23-12 after halftime.
Breanna Pitcher helped the Lady Chargers stay close with drives into the paint and four points in the first quarter. Liberty, on 3-pointers from Keiona Kirby and Dominique James, were ahead 11-7 after a quarter.
WHS turnovers just before the second quarter ended helped Liberty carry a 24-17 lead into the break.
Kirby, who finished with a game-high 21 points and was named tourney MVP, pumped in eight points in the third with big baskets inside and from outside. Kirby’s third-quarter tallies were enough to outscore the entire WHS roster, which managed just six points on baskets by Pitcher, Kaley Leyhue and Teddy Vincent to trail 41-23 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, each team scored six points. All the Westview points came from the free-throw line.
