Union City’s last shot of 2010 turned out to be a memorable one.
Russ Smith bottomed a deuce off a feed from Tyler Steward with five seconds left to lift the Tornadoes to a 58-56 triumph over Hardin Valley in the seventh-place game at the Beech Holiday Tournament.
The Obion Central girls weren’t as fortunate in their outing in the championship game of the Dyersburg Regional Hospital Christmas Tournament.
The Lady Rebels fell 71-66 to Poplar Bluff (Mo.) — which turned out to be the tourney’s other finalist instead of the host team as inaccurately reported to The Messenger by the OC coaching staff — in the title tilt.
At the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic, Union City fell 57-50 to Ballard Memorial in the third-place game.
Obion Central returns to action on Tuesday at Haywood. UC plays at Lake County a week from tonight.
UC 58, Hardin Val. 56 (B)
The Twisters (7-12) trailed by six points with less than two minutes to play before Antonio Cox bottomed back-to-back 3-pointers to knot the game up at 54-all.
From there, Peyton Mosley sank a stickback and Smith went on to bottom the game-winner.
Cox poured in a team-best 26 points with seven 3-pointers for Union City. Smith totaled 10 points.

Obion Central (16-3) was up 22-10 after one quarter, 37-30 at intermission and 51-41 with three periods complete.
Poplar Bluff outscored the Lady Rebels 24-15 in the final canto to obtain the victory.
All-tournament team member Brandi Goodman had a team-best 20 points for the Lady Rebels, while fellow All-Star Mackenzie Tucker totaled 14.
Additionally, Paige Hicks offered 15 markers, while Macy Wright finished with 13.

The Lady Bombers outscored Union City (8-7) 23-10 in the fourth to snatch victory.
All-Tournament honoree Amber Fair poured in 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Shenisha Huff totaled 13 points.
Jackie Hudson turned in her fourth double-double in as many outings with 10 points and a like number of boards.
