A Fulton liquor store was destroyed in an early-morning fire.
The Wine Cellar at 505 West Highland Drive was leveled in a fire that broke out about 3 a.m. today.
Fulton city manager Kenney Etherton, who is currently serving as acting assistant fire chief, said the fire appeared to be in the store’s attic when firefighters from the Fulton Fire Department first arrived on the scene. He said within about three to five minutes, the fire broke through the back of the roof.
The South Fulton Fire Department responded by automatic mutual aid to assist and Fulton fire officials also called the Union City and Clinton, Ky., fire departments for aerial support and the Cayce, Ky., and Water Valley, Ky., fire departments for manpower.
Etherton said strong winds “blowing in the wrong direction” early today were a hindrance as firefighters worked to battle the blaze. “That didn’t help at all,” he said.
One firefighter went to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots.
The fire remains under investigation and Etherton said fire officials don’t yet know the cause of the blaze. He said he has notified the state fire marshal’s office, but it will be Monday before someone arrives at the scene due to the weekend holiday.
