Smith picked as conference’s top freshman

Terence Smith
MARTIN, Tenn. — For the fourth time in five weeks, the University of Tennessee at Martin’s men’s basketball team has produced the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, as Terence Smith received the honor on Monday. Smith follows teammates Troy King and two-time winner Mike Liabo. King was the recipient on Dec. 13, while Liabo earned the award on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6.
Smith, a freshman guard from Russelville, Ala., scored a season-best 20 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in UT Martin’s loss to Murray State last week. The 6-3, 175-pound guard was the only Skyhawk in double figures and almost single-handedly kept UTM in the game. His scoring helped the team to a nine-point lead in the second half before the Racers came back and won 66-54.
Smith hit 55.6 percent of his shots (5-of-9 ) from the floor and was 10-of-11 at the free-throw line, good for 90.9 percent against Murray State. The only free throw he missed, he grabbed the offensive rebound, was fouled and made two more free throw attempts.
Smith, King and Liabo will have to step it up another notch for the Skyhawks this week as UT Martin is on the road to tangle with a pair of Division I’s top teams. After taking on undefeated Ohio State on Monday night, the Skyhawks will head to Knoxville to take on the Vols at 6 on Wednesday night.
