Butler picks up third OVC award

Three-peat — UT Martin Skyhawk freshman Heather Butler was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the third time this season after she averaged 20 points per game last week and scored the winning bucket on Sunday.
MARTIN, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced Monday that University of Tennessee at Martin guard Heather Butler has been named Freshman of the Week, giving the Skyhawks five winners out of six tries in that category of weekly league awards.
It’s the third career Freshman of the Week honor for Butler, who also won on Nov. 22 and Dec. 13. Her Skyhawk teammates Beth Hawn (Nov. 14) and Jasmine Newsome (Dec. 6) also have earned the weekly freshman accolades this season.
This past week, Butler led the team in scoring with 20 points and the game-winning basket against Indiana State on Sunday.
She made a layup with five seconds left in the game that gave the Skyhawks the 68-66 victory. Butler went 6-for-12 from the floor, including going 4-for-7 from behind the 3-point arc. She also dished out seven assists and brought down four boards in the win.
After playing their first 10 games of the season on the road, Butler and the Skyhawks return to action with another tough road swing. UT Martin will travel to play the University of Louisville on Tuesday, Dec. 28 and then trek across the Bluegrass State to take on the University of Kentucky on Thursday, Dec. 30.
The Skyhawks’ next home game will be on Jan. 6 when they host Austin Peay in OVC action. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Elam Center.
