Reports from the public received by The Messenger about equipment being moved out of the local Goodyear plant are true.
Union City Goodyear communications manager Clint Smith confirmed the actions earlier this week, but stated Union City’s status is “unchanged.”
“Yes, Goodyear has been moving some tire-building equipment from Union City to its plant in Oklahoma since earlier this year. This allows Goodyear to continue meeting market demand while maximizing the overall efficiency of its North American Tire operations,” he said.
United Steelworkers Local 878 recording secretary Johnny Dyer also confirmed the equipment is being moved and that the local plant’s status is unchanged.
Dyer said there are no plans for layoffs.
“(Goodyear) has been telling us there is the possibility of an increase in the ticket number,” he said.
Dyer said the plant is still under the three-phase agreement that has already seen buy outs in Phase I. A second phase would call for more buy outs, but that has not yet come. The third phase would be closure of the plant.
