30 Years Ago
Oct. 7 — The Union City “B” team routed Trenton 35-6. Twister quarterback Aaron Dearmitt was in on three scores, throwing two touchdown passes and running for another. Dearmitt’s two TD throws were to John Burnett. Phillip Mathis outran the Golden Tide defense on a 50-yard touchdown dash.
Oct. 8 — South Fulton blanked Rives 38-0 on the junior high gridiron. Jeff Pope had the longest touchdown run of the outing for the Red Devils — a 42-yarder. Additionally, Joie Garmon dashed 40 yards for a SF score, while Tony Hobbs and Greg Britton both made 35-yard carries to the endzone. South Fulton’s Allen Dickerson broke away off tackle on a 36-yard touchdown run.

Oct. 8 — The difference between Obion Central and Osceola, Ark., turned out to be about 12 inches. The Rebels stopped a late two-point conversion to preserve a 28-27 triumph. Scoring-wise, Todd Phipps returned a kickoff 72 yards to paydirt for OC, while Emmanuel Cobb took the pigskin across the goalline twice and Chris Wiggins had a four-yard touchdown carry for the county locals.
Oct. 11 — Union City native Delmar Wilkey shot a hole-in-one at Goodyear’s Wingfoot Golf Course. Wilkey’s ace came on the second hole during the course’s closing-day scramble. He used a 6-iron on the 140-yard hole. Teddy Montgomery, Bobby Bore and Frank Givens witnessed the shot.

Oct. 9 — No. 1 Union City (Class 2A) routed Westview 42-14 on the high school gridiron. Andrew Evans returned an interception 82 yards for a UC score and also had two rushing touchdowns. Mario McElrath was also responsible for a Twister touchdown — a 19-yard run. Additionally, George Evans booted a pair of field goals for Union City.
Oct. 13 — Lake Road edged Hillcrest 20-14 on the middle school gridiron. General quarterback Ben Hager broke free for a 60-yard touchdown scamper, while Joey Shaffer dove in from four yards out. Hager also found Justin Easley for a four-yard scoring connection. The Cougars had Tarez Bacon, who rushed for 231 yards on 20 carries, with both of their touchdowns.

Oct. 11 — Patrick Haskins was 8-for-12 passing with two touchdowns tosses as Hillcrest bested South Fulton 44-20 in the 10th annual Rebel Bowl. Haskins also rushed for one touchdown. John Michael Green was on the receiving end of one of the Cougar TD passes — a 26-yard throw — while Clint Jones caught the other, which measured 36 yards. Sam Curtis was the leading rusher for SF with 75 yards and a touchdown. Joey Henderson and Montre Lewis each also took in a score for the Redmen.
Oct. 11 — Obion Central was one score better than Union City in a 36-29 junior varsity victory. Rebel Justin Ogden, who rushed for a team-best 145 yards, had one score. Hunter Calhoun also reached the 100-yard plateau for OC and took in two touchdowns. Also, Josh Pollock made a 62-yard trip to the endzone, while Rebel quarterback Brady Boucher hit Rob Hutson for a 32-yarder aerial TD.

Oct. 9 — South Fulton shut out Hillcrest 50-0 in the Rebel Bowl. Tymaine Strickland ran for three touchdowns for the victorious Red Devils. Also, SF’s Jacoby Garmon broke free for a 31-yard score and returned a fumble for a TD. Red Devil quarterback Harrison Hawks also hooked up with Kyle Watkins on a 51-yard touchdown connection.
Oct. 12 — Patrick Haskins ran wild, totaling 263 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion during Obion Central’s 22-20 upset of No. 7 Dyersburg. Lucas Fulbright also offered a TD and two-point run for the Rebels. Defensively, Blake Boyd had a team-best 11 stops for Central, while Joe Ferguson made eight tackles to go along with his fumble caused and recovery. All totaled, Obion Central outgained Dyersburg 347-232.
