The Class of 1960 of the former Woodland Mills School recently celebrated their 50-year reunion with a dinner at Boyette’s Restaurant at Reelfoot Lake.
The room was decorated in the school colors of purple and white, and a purple-draped table displayed special memorabilia, including jackets, annuals, high school play books and photographs. There was a special area in memory of the three class members who are deceased, with their pictures and a candle for each. The large class picture, on loan from Woodland Mills City Hall, was prominently displayed.
Bonnie (Driver) Napier of Woodland Mills welcomed the graduating class members, former members of the class who were special guests and their spouses. She read letters from James and Dee (Reid) Bruer of Austin, Texas, and Carl Carson, who were unable to attend. Also unable to attend was Van Duncan of Kell, Ill.
Roger Fowler of Lakeland, class president, commemorated the three class members who are deceased, Ed Cole, Camelia (Nash) Cole and Gayle (Blackburn) Shelton. He shared personal memories of their contributions to the class. Calvin Cary of Union City sang “Go Rest High on That Mountain” in their memory and then entertained the group with other songs.
The Rev. Jack Tuck of Union City blessed the meal. Following dinner, the group visited, took pictures, shared memories and caught up on the events of their classmates’ lives. Graduates of the Class of 1960 attached their name tags to balloons and released them outside the restaurant. The class members then enjoyed desserts that were favorites in the school lunchroom at the home of Darrell and Patsy (McCollum) Dugger of Union City.
The next morning, the class members and friends met for breakfast at Ryan’s in Union City. Bonnie Napier of Woodland Mills did a wonderful job of coordinating all the events with the help of several class members, including Danny Isbell, Gayle (Moultrie) Napier and Faye (Hammonds) Hutchens, all of Union City, and Bill Sowell of Woodland Mills.
Graduating class members, their spouses and guests who attended were Kenneth and Karen (Foster) Brooks, Jesse Carr, Cary, Shirley Cary, H.E. and Sherry Garrigan, Sonny Hutchens, Mrs. Hutchens, Isbell, Faye Isbell, Gayle Napier, Tuck, Rita Tuck and their daughter, Linda Tuck, all of Union City; Glenda (Hampton) Chrisman of Atlanta; Fowler and Salpy Fowler of Lakeland; Gary and Betty (McCollum) Gallimore of Eads; Wayne and Ginger Hoffman of Chattanooga; Nancy (Isbell) Ingram of Jordan, Ky; Wayne and Bonnie Napier, Sowell and Vickie Sowell, all of Woodland Mills; and Hazel (Blanton) Smith of South Fulton.
Former classmates and friends who attended were Jim Evans of Houston; Robert and Charlotte Garrigan of Hickman, Ky.; John and Kay (Jett) McEwen, Mr. and Mrs. Dugger; Ruby (Coleman) Prince of Troy; Edward and Martha Smith of Springville; James Lloyd and Donna Williams of Lindsey, Texas; and Dave and Kay (Moultrie) Shockley of Paducah, Ky.
