Briefly Lady Rebel soccer gains 10th victory The Obion Central girls’ soccer team has reached the 10-win plateau for the first time in the young program’s history. The Lady Rebels, in their second season of competition, also sewed up second place in the Region 7A-AA’s North Division with their 6-1 besting of Trenton on Tuesday. Paige Hicks had three goals for Central (10-2-1) as did Madi Bell. Hope Montgomery also offered a “beautiful crossover” assist for OC. Defensively, Lady Rebel coach Daniel Johnston lauded the play of Rosa Bustos, Baylie Boucher, Krista Tackett and Lana Roberson. The defensive backfield allowed just two shots on OC goalie Taylor Baker. Thursday’s scheduled game against Dyer County has been canceled due to scheduling conflicts. Obion Central returns to action next week with a pair of home games against Covington on Monday and Gibson County on Tuesday. Russell’s best shot wins Wynridge title Matt Russell gave it his best shot somewhere along the way at Wynridge Greens’ recent two-day club championship tournament. Russell edged Keith Gilliam 146-147 to claim the course’s title. In seniors’ play, Ray Swift carded a 147 to win the crown, while Duke Mitchell was a shot behind and the runner-up with a 148. The “SuperSeniors” divison had Bobby LaRue as its champion at 148. Don Dills was second among SS players with a 163. On the women’s side, Sharon Dills shot a 178 to earn the Wynridge championship. OC girls 1st, guys 2nd at Big Sandy outing The Obion Central cross country girls finished first and the boys second at the Big Sandy Invitational on Monday afternoon. On the girls’ side, Peyton Daniel, Mandi McDaniel, Autumn Yates, Nicole Storey, Katie Beth Vancleave, Brittney Dodd, Hope Montgomery and Whittney Dodd Rebels who medaled were Tanner Noles, Joshua Gale, Coleman Dunn and Jackson Smith. Union City’s Daniel Willamson also ran, finishing in sixth place overall. The OC cross country teams runs again on Thursday at Dyersburg. UC product Chandler in eighth at Murray The Union University golf team finished in eighth place at the Murray State University Invitational. Murray State won the three-round tournament with an 860 team total. UU totaled a 904. The Bulldog linksters were led by senior and Union City product Ryan Chandler, who tied for 11th place with a score of 220. Union returns to the links next Monday and Tuesday in the UT Martin Invitational at Paris Landing State Park. |
