Fresh off a big win against rival Dresden, Greenfield Junior High kept its momentum going by next grounding the Hawks of Harrelson.
Finding success on the ground and through the air, the Yellowjackets built a large lead early and withstood a late Hawk surge to win, 28-14, this past Tuesday in Greenfield.
The Yellowjackets opened with possession and went to their bread and butter – Tanner Smithson. The running back racked up 30 yards on his first three carries. Miles Cavitt picked up four before Smithson broke loose for 14. Cavitt finished off the drive with a 19-yard carry to the end zone. John David Ricketts was shut down on the conversion try, but the home team led 6-0 with 6:07 left in the first quarter.
Greenfield held Harrelson to just two yards, forced a punt and held onto possession through the end of the first quarter.
Ricketts netted six and a first down to open the second. Smithson was contained for two yards and Cavitt gained one. Smithson took a pitch 15 yards around the left side to keep the Jackets moving. On first-and-goal, Smithson collected three yards and a touchdown. He ran in the conversion and Greenfield led 14-0 with 5:40 left before the half.
The Hawks turned the ball over on downs and Greenfield took over on its own 40. Smithson gained 14 on two carries and threw incomplete to Cavitt on a halfback pass. Rickets found Smithson for 11 yards, threw incomplete on his next pass and connected with Chris Reddick on two passes for a total of 16 yards. Smithson took a handoff one yard and caught an 18-yard pass from Ricketts for the third touchdown of the game. The conversion failed, but Greenfield enjoyed a 20-0 lead at the break.
The Hawks made it look easy to start the third as they created a 67-yard touchdown to start the quarter. With the conversion, they cut the lead to 20-8 with 5:12 left in the quarter.
Greenfield took its time on its next drive and utilized the running of Cavitt and Smithson before Ricketts found Reddick with a 10-yard pass to the end zone. Ricketts hit Cavitt with a pass for the conversion and Greenfield led 28-8.
The Hawks scored once more on a fake punt and a long run in the fourth, but time ran out and the Yellowjackets hung on for the victory.
Smithson had 128 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 20 carries. He also had two catches for 29 yards and a touchdown. Ricketts was 7-of-9 passing for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
