James Russell Meek Jr., 90, of the Midway community died Sept. 22, 2010, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Stanley’s Chapel United Methodist Church near Union City, with the Revs. Franklin Gardner, Dennis Johnston and Jerry Leggett officiating. Burial will follow in Stanley’s Chapel Cemetery near Union City.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren and other family members.
Friends may call at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin 5-8 this evening. The body will lie in state at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday.
He was born July 27, 1920, in Obion County, son of the late Lelia (McCrary) and James Russell Meek Sr. He was the widower of Barbara (Bragg) Meek and was a graduate of the former Rives High School. He had been a flight instructor during World War II and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of Stanley’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was a retired merchant who had owned and operated the former Midway Grocery.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James Russell Meek III and Diane Meek of Ducktown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Burnie Powers and Cyndi and David Earls, all of Union City; five grandchildren, Jon Ed Powers, Tripp Powers, Kelley Powers, Joy (Earls) Gurgel and Rebecca Earls; and four great-grandchildren Cameron Powers, Bayleigh Powers, Jon Brayden Powers and Luke Gurgel.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Blount Winter.
