It was the first formal meeting of the new slate of Weakley County Commissioners elected to office in August.
Upon the retirement announcement by commission chairman Dick Phebus, the board chose Jimmy Westbrook to take over the helm of the commission.
“I appreciate your confidence in me and this position. I will try to treat everything as fair as humanly possible. I will try to treat everyone with respect and dignity and fairly to transact business as we can,” Westbrook said upon accepting the position of commission chair Monday morning.
Phebus and a second retiring commissioner, David Rook, were honored for their years of service during the meeting.
Commissioner Roger Stewart was appointed as chairman pro-tempre of the commission.
In appointment news, board members selected the following community members for various positions:
• Jamison Peevyhouse was re-appointed to serve as the county safety officer.
• Ron Cheatman was re-appointed to serve as the county service officer.
• Jamison Peevyhouse was re-appointed to serve as the county’s emergency management director.
• Mark Stafford and Jeff Washburn were appointed to serve on the Weakley County Emergency Communications Board of Directors.
• Roger Vancleave was re-appointed to serve on the county’s health and safety standards board of directors.
In resolution news, the board of commissioners adopted the rules regulating the procedures of the board of county commissioners. A copy of the rules can be found on the county’s website at www.weakeycountytn.gov. The rules to conduct business for the county remain unchanged.
In budget news, commissioners authorized a budget amendment to the General Purpose School Fund for the fiscal year after a Partnership for Success Grant was omitted by error from the budget.
The Partnership for Success Grant was $36,416. It is a state awarded grant, which is reimbursable and does not include county funds. The purpose of the grant is to help reduce and prevent substance abuse in the community.
A request by the Weakley County School Board to allow for a one-time bonus payment for part-time employees and other board of education employees identified by the director of schools was approved by the county commission Monday morning.
According to the resolution, the Board of Education has the available funds to cover the one-time bonus payment for part-time employees.
Board members also approved a resolution executing security bonds for all county constitutional officials.
The next meeting of the Weakley County Commission is set for 5:30 Nov. 15 at the Weakley County courthouse.
