MFD, Domino’s join hands for safety’s sake

While the issue of fire safety is something that is practiced year-round by firefighters of the Martin Fire Department, there is one month and specifically, one week, that the message is enforced to the public.
During Fire Prevention Week this year, Oct. 4 through Oct. 10, MFD and Domino’s Pizza of Martin will join forces to deliver food as well as their message of fire safety.
When Martin residents call in a pizza delivery order from Domino’s that week, the MFD and the pizzeria will choose which homes will receive a pizza delivered by fire engine.
The firefighters will then offer fire safety tips to the residents and perform smoke alarm checks.
If the smoke alarms in the home are in working order, the residents’ food will be free.
If the MFD finds smoke detectors lacking batteries, or with dead batteries, the members of the department will replace the batteries.
For residents lacking smoke detectors, the department will install a working smoke detector on the spot.
“Teaming up with Domino’s Pizza and joining this national campaign, which is also endorsed by the National Fire Protection Agency and Dairy Management Incorporated, is a great way to spread the fire prevention message in our community,” MFD Chief Russell Schwahn said. “We are looking forward to a successful Fire Prevention Week.”
To get a head-start on fire prevention month, here are a few fire safety tips:
• Practice fire drills at home.
• Check batteries in smoke detectors.
• Stay low in smoke.
• Choose an emergency meeting place.
• Never play with fire.
October is National Fire Prevention Month. This safety effort is a nationwide partnership between Domino’s and fire departments.
