By the numbers: Phipps’ 229 yards passing in a 19-14 victory over county-rival Union City were impressive enough to make him a frontrunner for the weekly award. More noteworthy, though, was that nine of his 16 completions resulted in first downs, and  he did not throw an interception for the first time in a game since Week 0. Phipps spread the wealth, too, connecting with five different receivers. He also ran for a pair of scores — his first such rushing TDs — on keepers of two yards and one yard.
Sound bite: “No doubt, the big thing was he was able to make good throws and completions when it was third-and-long,” Central head coach Shawn Jackson said of his signal-caller, who converted on four plays of 10 yards or more on third or fourth down. “Those were some big completions. The other thing was that he didn’t make mistakes and try to force the ball. He made the right reads and the right decisions.”
HONORABLE MENTION: LaDevin Fair, OC junior running back, totaled 134 rushing yards on 27 carries with one touchdown in his first experience in the Central-UC rivalry. Nathan Ward, OC senior wide receiver, was Phipps’ go-to receiver with seven catches for 86 yards — four of which resulted in first downs.
