Skylar Hopkins

 Defense
 Skylar Hopkins
    School:    Obion Central
    Grade:  Junior
          Height:    5-10
    Weight:    345
    Pos.:  Nose guard

By the numbers: Generously listed at 345 on the Rebel roster, Hopkins was truly the big man in the middle in Central’s defensive scheme that shut down UC’s potent midline/veer offense. Hopkins controlled the inside gaps, registering 11 tackles in all — seven solos, four of which were behind the line of scrimmage. He anchored a unit that limited the Tornadoes to just 23 yards and one first down in the second half when UC did not score after taking a 14-6 intermission advantage.
Sound bite: “When he comes to play, Skylar is capable of being very disruptive on the interior,” Jackson said of Hopkins. “And he certainly came to play Friday against Union City. He really negated a lot of what they had been able to do against most everybody else between the guards. I think he’s finally healthy, too, after struggling with some shoulder and ankle issues. We need him to be consistent and give us the type of effort every week that he gave us last Friday.”
HONORABLE MENTION:  Joe Ferguson, OC senior linebacker, was in on a team-high 14 tackles, one for minus-yardage against Union City. Tanner Miller, OC junior safety, No. 2 on the Rebel tackle list for the season with 54 hits, totaled 11 stops during the Rebels’ win at UC. Chris Boucher, UC junior defensive back, had nine stops during the Twisters’ defeat to Obion Central. Brett Gore, UC sophomore linebacker, also had nine takedowns for the Golden Tornadoes. Cody Tatum, SF junior linebacker, totaled a team-high eight takedowns in the Red Devils’ defeat at Humboldt.
