South Fulton’s Sam Murray knees the ball during the Devilettes’ soccer win on Tuesday.
The South Fulton girls’ soccer team can brag of another first in its inaugural varsity season.
The Devilettes are now in the midst of their first winning streak after Tuesday’s 4-1 triumph over McKenzie.
With the win, South Fulton improves to 4-5 on the campaign.
In other prep soccer action on Tuesday, Obion Central came up just short against perennial favorite Westview, falling 2-1.
Both local soccer squads have a few regular season contests remaining.
The Lady Rebels play at Jackson North Side Thursday.
OC also goes to South Fulton on Monday.
Next Tuesday’s soccer slate has Central at home against McKenzie.
South Fulton’s regular-season finale is Oct. 4 at home against Trenton.
The Lady Rebels play Trenton the following day (Oct. 5) in Troy and at Dyer County on Oct. 7. OC’s final regular season match is Oct. 12 against Gibson County.
The soccer postseason is slated to begin Oct. 18.
SF 4, McKenzie 1
Tied 1-all at halftime, Devilette soccer coach Mixon Moore took a page out of softball mentor Curt Lee’s playbook.
After the team reached the sideline for a halftime talk, Moore instructed his charges to run 10 laps around the goal for what he believed was play that fell short of their skill level.
The tactic must have worked as Desiray Sturgeon exploded for a hat trick (three goals) in the second half to account for the difference.
Kayla Lindsey had SF’s only first half goal.
Westview 2, OC 1
The Lady Chargers scored first and last on Tuesday to escape Troy with a triumph.
Lady Rebel Paige Hicks accounted for the lone local score with her goal sandwiched between the two Westview goals.
Goalie Taylor Baker made 15 saves for Obion Central (5-2-1).
