Dresden senior Dale Hutcherson had a night to remember in the Lions’ 40-6 win over Bruceton.
Hutcherson connected on all 14 passes he attempted, including connecting with his receivers for five touchdowns. His 14 completions covered a total of 285 yards.
The Lions’ quarterback also rushed for a touchdown in the easy District 13-A 40-6 win over the visiting Tigers on Friday night at Rotary Field. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 43 yards on five runs.
While Hutcherson had the DHS offense clicking, the Lion defense had a fine night as well, limiting Bruceton (1-3, 0-2) to 182 total yards and eight first downs. Dresden (4-1, 1-1) held Bruceton to one yard, no gain or a loss on 17 snaps. The lone Tiger score came in the final two minutes.
Even with all those numbers, it appeared Bruceton would take the lead on the game’s opening drive. Of the Tigers’ 182 total yards, 61 yards came on a Chandler Jordan run to give  his team a first down at the Lion 10-yard line. The Dresden defenders were up to the task, twice stopping Jordan for losses before giving up a three yard gain to the Tiger senior. On fourth down, QB Hayden Howell misfired to give Dresden possession starting at its own 13.
Hutcherson immediately went to work, connecting on first down with junior receiver Colin Kanehl for an 88-yard touchdown strike.
That duo burned the Bruceton defense repeatedly as Kanehl caught five of Hutcherson’s aerials covering a total distance of 185 yards. Three of Kanehl’s catches resulted in TDs.
After swapping punts, the Lions again wasted no time lighting the scoreboard. Hutcherson found tight end Tyler McPeak open for a 41-yard scoring strike. Again the Lions needed just one play to score. After missing the PAT kick on the first touchdown, Dresden opted to go for two points. Hutcherson hit running back Eric VanDyke with a pass to convert the play and boost the Lion lead to 14-0 with 1:23 remaining to play in the first quarter.
Following the third Tiger punt of the game, Dresden added its third touchdown. The seven-play drive covered 64 yards and culminated with Hutcherson finding Kanehl for a 26-yard touchdown toss. Dylan Kemp booted the extra point for a 21-0 Dresden lead with nine minutes still to play in the opening half.
Next, the Lion defense again forced Bruceton into a three-and-out series. Dresden took over at its own 42 and eventually marched into the red zone. VanDyke finished the drive, using second effort to cross the goal line from one yard out. Kemp’s kick was off target for a 27-0 DHS advantage with 4:16 left in the half.
Kanehl and Hutcherson notched their third touchdown hook-up of the half with 41 ticks left in the second quarter. Their third score covered 40 yards. A missed PAT kick left Dresden’s lead at 41-0 at halftime.
Dresden took the kickoff to open the third and picked up where it left off, marching 64 yards in eight plays. Hutcherson scored the final Lion TD on a seven-yard run.
Bruceton’s scoring drive began with 9:57 left to play. A Jeremy Watson pass to Jordan picked up 38 yards. Howell twice passed to Haden Williams for 7 and 10 yards before throwing a four-yard TD pass to Taylor Rich to close scoring in Dresden’s 40-6 win.
